One thing I have noticed about new students learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: they practice the moves a LOT . Once people have trained for a while, their amount of drilling tends to go away. When drilling a particular move, your body will remember it when you’re tired. But just knowing how to do the move does not equate to training! So if you really want a certain move or transition to work for you, drill it until you get it and then drill it 100 more times!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that does not require a lot of strength and endurance to use in a real life situation. Its success is attributed to the use of leverage and positioning over one’s opponent. However, in the training dojo, you are practicing against a partner who knows what you know as well. This is where the conditioning for BJJ plays a vital role in your development of the Art. When you have a low level of conditioning you will tire out before your partner does. The student who can train for longer periods of time will develop their technique at a quicker pace than a individual who cannot train for the same duration. It is very important to push yourself during the training session and not give up no matter how tired you become. This will improve your cardiovascular system over time and you will be able to push harder throughout your training session. Remember, you are constantly moving around the weight on top of you as well as trying to keep pressure on your partner. Because of the training practices of BJJ athletes, you will become a fitness machine in no time! Keep up the training!

Mark Heron is a dedicated computer professional who transfers the same mentality to his Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle. Mark, also an avid surfer, has excelled at Jiu-Jitsu through his hard work and dedication. He has received the nickname “Dangerous” as a metaphor for his mat work. He has a tremendous drive for the knowledge of Jiu-Jitsu. Mark is often the first person to class, usually by a half an hour, to work on some drilling and technical positioning.
Keep up the great work, Mark, we’re proud of you!
